The Science Behind the Math

This calculator uses a precise, scientific formula developed by researchers studying DNA methylation—the chemical changes to DNA that occur as mammals age.

By comparing the "epigenetic clocks" of humans and dogs, scientists found that a dog's aging process isn't linear. They age incredibly fast in their youth, but the aging process slows down significantly as they get older.

The Formula

16 × ln(dog age) + 31
  • ln stands for the natural logarithm.
  • This model perfectly aligns major milestones: a 7-week-old puppy matches a 9-month-old human baby, and a 12-year-old dog matches a 70-year-old human.
  • Note: This formula is most accurate for dogs older than a few months.
